Fine lines and scrobbling compulsions

Along with playing cassettes at work to save time, I’ll have the tapes’ playlists in iTunes, so I can scrobble the songs I play on cassette to last.fm. You know, to keep things accurate. I haven’t shaken that compulsion yet because I love my last.fm lists. “But what about saving time?”, you may ask. To which I would respond, “Where did you hide that box of cookies?”

In an effort to be more productive at work I will try and avoid using turntable.fm and other media players at work on days when our office receives a lot of caller traffic. My solution: listen to cassettes.

My tape player is plugged into my office speakers, so when a call comes in, I simply turn off the song and do not have to scramble to find a program playing music.

I have made myself a few tapes that I will enjoy at work.

I was asked to make a mixtape for a twelve person mailing club coordinated by Sarah Cass. Each person was assigned a different month of the year (2012) and given the responsibility of mailing everyone else a mix. Each month, I received a different set of music by compiled by a different person. These are images for my contribution (October). My tape was Halloween/blood/death-themed.

I made some extras. This is an open, but limited edition.

If it’s broke, but it works better than the new crap, use it.

For over a month I have had aspirations of returning to the tape makin’ biz. Through the Nineties I worked with a 5-disc CD changer and a boom box with line in jacks. The left RCA in jack has long since been on vacation and any tape I make using this set up only records the right side. So I was making mono tapes. I subsequently stopped making tapes.

So when the mix bug bit to update production (thanks to tape.mx), I found a dual-cassette deck on eBay for $30 and had it sent to me. This recording deck has eaten two blank tapes so far. First we try, then we trust, then we look for a cliff from which to toss the garbage.

Then, I found what passed for a boom box on craigslist and paid $10. It has a lot of nice flashing lights and a rolling control panel, but the cassette decks only open sporadically. I have yet to open the b deck a second time since I’ve purchased this lemon.

So I am out $40 and am no better off. Last night I really, really wanted to make a tape, so I broke out the old, semi-trustworthy boom box and settled to only have the right side record. I made a C60 Cocteau Twins tape for myself to play at work. This exercise was more about the process than the actual product.

Mission completion. I had more fun making this busted tape than with any CD I’ve burned in the last year. The packaging was made to symbolize the not completely whole aspect of the tape.

The last of this round of tapelove. *sigh* Michael Jackson’s Thriller on cassette. There was a week or so where I took this tape and my sister’s cassette player

and played the title song “Thriller” over and over for my friends. Imagine a handful of third graders, hanging out at the monkey bars, feeling cool and enjoying Thriller. We did this for several recess periods. I’m not sure if our interest or the batteries ran out first. Fond memories tied to this tape. I remember playing this on the bus ride home one day and being lectured by some girl that the song was bad because Vincent Price says, “H.E.double hockey stick!” Ah, elementary drama.

This cassingle is in my Top-Five Cassingle list. This tape was with me out the door as I left home for my very first date. My mom allowed me to borrow her car for the event (borrowing her car was a big deal) and I had a lot on my mind, but taking a few hours’ worth of tapes was not one of them. There are two songs on the tape and my date and I heard them both many, many times. I didn’t want silence, and there was plenty of that on this date in the car, so I simply turned the volume down and let the tape play. Wish I could find the b-side “A Watcher’s Point of View (Youth Radio Mix)”.

I found this cassingle during the early days of my growing love for Siouxsie Sioux. Look at that cover. The only thing I do not like is the blasted b-side, cleverly called “B Side Ourselves”. I’ve never liked it. Which is a shame because I love “O Baby” with the intensity of a thousand two-year-old given Oreos for dinner. This is a cherished cassingle.
